We didn't really get stuck in much traffic on Oahu. Megan duBoisBefore leaving for Oahu, I'd heard from friends and read on social-media groups that getting around can be difficult. My fears of sitting in traffic for the whole week set in before I even stepped foot off the plane. In reality, my family and I never got stuck in gridlocked traffic over our six days on the island. We also found the drivers to be much more courteous than we're used to back in Florida.

Two tourists said Google Maps mistakenly guided them into the Australian wilderness. AdvertisementA pair of German tourists say Google Maps mistakenly led them into the Australian wilderness, resulting in a grueling ordeal that lasted for several days. "We decided, 'OK, let's follow Google Maps because Google Maps knows maybe more than we know'," Maier the outlet. However, this is not the first time hikers have found themselves in trouble after following Google Maps directions. North Shore Rescue, a volunteer search-and-rescue team, said it seemed the hikers were following a nonexistent trail on Google Maps.

We’re looking back at the strongest, smartest opinion takes of the week from CNN and other outlets. “In his courageous and too short life,” wrote Russia scholar Daniel Treisman, “Navalny became a symbol of hope for the younger generations of his compatriots. “He never gave up on the prospect of what he called ‘the beautiful Russia of the future,’” Treisman noted. “For a ‘beautiful Russia of the future’ to emerge in coming years, Putin must lose the war he started. The wintry mess left both parties racing to rewrite last-minute campaign plans and sophisticated models to understand how the storm might affect turnout. But many Republican voters still prefer to vote on Election Day, and their party is accustomed to closing a gap. The party has won nearly every major election on Long Island since 2021, partly on the strength of its turnout operation. Peter T. King, a former Republican congressman, conceded that the snow could cost his party a couple of percentage points. Still, he predicted that the recently revived Nassau County Republican machine was up to the task.

WHITEFISH POINT, Mich. (AP) — Shipwreck hunters have discovered a merchant ship that sank in Lake Superior in 1940, taking its captain with it, during a storm off Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. But as the Arlington and a larger freighter, the Collingwood, made their way across Lake Superior they encountered dense fog and then a storm after nightfall that battered both ships. The crew, “out of fear for their lives, and without orders from Captain Burke,” began to abandon ship, they said in a statement. Reports indicate he was last seen near its pilothouse, waving at the Collingwood, minutes before his ship vanished into the lake. “It’s exciting to solve just one more of Lake Superior’s many mysteries, finding Arlington so far out in the lake," Fountain said in a statement.

For a certain breed of millennial like me, Tina Fey’s “Mean Girls” was gospel — a movie turned cultural phenomenon that put names and labels to the kind of bullying that any woman who’d been to middle or high school would recognize. For a long time, researchers just thought girls didn’t bully as much as boys. Then in the early aughts, a handful of books brought the concept of girls’ “relational aggression” into the mainstream. But much has changed in the 20 years since the original “Mean Girls" movie came out. So when Ms. Fey returned last month with her musical movie “Mean Girls” — her latest twist on the original, starring Reneé Rapp — it was inevitable there would be some changes.

CNN —Surfing is about to experience a seismic change in 2024 as two of the standard-bearers of the sport are stepping away from the board and waves. Eight-time world champion Stephanie Gilmore is taking a break from competitive surfing – for a year, at least. Australian Gilmore, widely regarded as the greatest female surfer of all time, announced that she won’t be competing in the 2024 World Surf League (WSL) Championship Tour season, instead focusing on enjoying other things in life. Carissa Moore still plans to compete in Oahu and Tahiti for the Olympics before stepping away from the sport for good. Rachel McAdams, who played the iconic character in 2004’s “Mean Girls,” appeared on the new episode of “Saturday Night Live” to introduce musical guest Reneé Rapp. Rapp plays Regina George – the leader of cool-girl friend group “the plastics” – in the musical reboot of “Mean Girls” that debuted in theaters earlier this month. Adding to the “SNL” episode’s surprise cameo roster was an appearance by rapper Megan Thee Stallion, who performed “Not My Fault” with Rapp after McAdams’ introduction. McAdams also appeared in a hilarious sketch later in the episode, which was hosted by “Euphoria” star and first-time “SNL” emcee Jacob Elordi. The next episode of “SNL” will be hosted by “Madame Web” star Dakota Johnson and Justin Timberlake will be the musical guest.

Read previewAs it turns out, millennials can sit with the new "Mean Girls." But contrary to the marketing that made millennials feel ancient, the new "Mean Girls" isn't trying to push its thirtysomething viewers in front of a bus. The trailer called millennials old to their faces in a bold, pink-lettered declaration: "This isn't your mother's 'Mean Girls.'" Her talent is indisputable and can easily be recognized and appreciated by a member of any generation who finds themselves in a theater showing "Mean Girls" this winter. Thankfully, making a "Mean Girls" movie that isn't for millennials is just as impossible as making fetch happen — but the fact that they ever tried to still isn't grool.

The News Tribune was an afternoon paper, which was typical for northern New Jersey, where the big New York papers dominated the mornings. The veteran editors had time to go over articles, and reporting on local scandals, strikes or council meetings offered a crash course on accuracy and fairness. Young reporters usually didn’t stay long — not because of the chiles but because a local paper was the classic starting rung, the apprenticeship, for a career in reporting. But the training was invaluable and the experience unforgettable, especially for the power of reporting to get things done. The candidates in local elections or speakers at school board meetings dealt with matters that made a tangible and immediate difference to readers.

Paramount Pictures on Wednesday released a trailer for the film adaptation of the Broadway musical “Mean Girls,” which was itself an adaptation of the beloved 2004 movie about a girl trying to fit in with the popular crowd at her high school. The new film is due to hit theaters on Jan. 12. The reactions to Wednesday’s trailer, which was posted across social media platforms, were mixed. !”There was some confusion about the lack of musical performances in the trailer, given that the film is being positioned as an adaptation of a musical. One user on TikTok wrote in a comment: “Wait so it’s based on the musical and there’s no music???

Nov 8 (Reuters) - Australian Laura Enever has surfed her way into the record books after stroking into a giant four-story wave in Hawaii earlier this year, the World Surf League and Guinness World Records said on Wednesday. Enever, 31, was surfing at an outer reef on Oahu's North Shore in January when she caught a huge blue wall measured at 43.6 feet (13.3m), breaking the world record for the biggest wave ever paddled into by a woman. "I came up from that wave, and there was a huge, huge wave behind that took out the whole lineup, and I just saw boards flying everywhere. When I got to the inside, I was almost laughing - I just couldn't believe I'd caught that wave but also escaped that crazy, huge wave behind mine." The biggest wave ever ridden was a 26.2m monster at Nazare, towed into by Germany's Sebastian Steudtner in 2020.

Mr. Hill was the “consummate waterfront junk shop-souvenir store, occasionally aspiring to an antique shop,” Mr. Neill said. Mr. Hill opened Captain Hook’s with the Revolution’s Bicentennial in 1976 and remained until the turn of the century, setting up shop “when there was nothing there,” his wife, Trudy Hill, recalled. His other son, Jason, said: “How crazy was it that somebody who flipped items was able to make it to Sands Point? A person who went to garage sales?”At one point Mr. Hill charged 25 cents merely for the privilege of viewing his vast collection of nautical trinkets. But most customers would leave only a little poorer, having been talked into, say, a rubber snake by the persistent Mr. Hill, part huckster and part sincere enthusiast — a “good merchandizer,” Mr. Neill said.

But as early as age 5, Kissinger remembers her beloved mother disappearing for days at a time. By her 40s Kissinger has lost two siblings to suicide, and her alcoholic mother has survived several attempts. Silence was the vessel in which all of her family’s desperate ululations were contained. Every suicide begets a vacuum, family and friends left to fill it with stories, efforts to rationalize the unfathomable. Some, like Kissinger, try to move forward by ignoring the vacuum altogether, as though the very act of speaking it aloud could set off another bomb, one whose wick is drenched in secrecy and whose fuel burns with shame.

Five hotels in West Maui were accepting reservations again, according to their websites and the Maui Hotel and Lodging Association. Many local residents have objected to resuming tourism in West Maui, which includes Lahaina town and a stretch of coastline to the north. Thousands of tourists staying in beachfront hotels north of the burn zone left Maui in the days after the fire. Some 11,000 hotel rooms in West Maui have since either sat empty or housed displaced Lahaina residents under a program administered by the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the Red Cross. True vanilla is a demanding crop, so labor-intensive that at times the market value of the beans has surpassed that of silver, weight for weight. And since each bean yields only 2 percent vanillin at best, the cost of pure vanilla is even higher. The vanilla bean on my desk comes from the small Hawaiian town of Laie on Oahu’s North Shore. It’s longer and darker than the other vanilla beans in my cupboard, its fragrance more insistently narcotic. To begin with, while the vanilla orchid — planifolia is the species most widely grown — is a hermaphrodite (like most flowering plants), with both male and female parts, it can’t pollinate itself.
